Marriage & Weddings

The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant which is more than a contract. A covenant expresses a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. The celebration of marriage is also a liturgical act appropriately held in a public liturgy at church. Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy.

Here at St. Joseph’s we welcome both parishioners and non-parishioners to celebrate their marriage at our parish. Here are the steps you should consider if you would like to celebrate your marriage at St. Joseph’s:

  • Contact the Parish Office by calling 301-663-0907 ext. 3022 as soon as possible to see if the date you desire is available. Note that you must contact our Parish Office no later than six months in advance of the wedding. This is to allow enough time for the both of you to attend the marriage preparation classes and to have the most options for scheduling the Church.
  • You will be scheduled for a meeting with Father or Deacon Greg for the pre-nuptial interview.
  • You will then be able to sign up for the marriage preparation program being offered at our parish or the archdiocese.
  • You can then sign up for the Natural Family Planning Class.
  • Closer to the date you will also meet with our Wedding Sacristan who will go over the liturgical details as well as what happens at the rehearsal.

All these details are further described in our St. Joseph’s Wedding Booklet that you can find here. The suggested music selections can be found here.

Non-parishioners are asked to arrange for their own priest or deacon to officiate at the wedding.
