Vocations

Definition:

The word ‘vocation’ comes from the Latin word “to call.” When we speak of vocations, we are speaking about the call that God gives to each of us as individuals. One’s ‘vocation’ is more than his or her profession, career, or hobby. It refers to the manner of life by which God calls us to serve Him and live out our baptism. There are four main branches of vocations: 1) Single persons, 2) Married persons, 3) Consecrated religious, such as sisters and nuns, brothers and monks, and 4) those called to the Sacrament of Holy Orders, namely deacons (both married and single) and priests.

Through prayer, conversations with others about our desires and talents, and with the help of our pastors and other counselors, we can each discern how God calls us to live out our baptismal call to service and proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven.
