The Poor box this weekend is being designated for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to support their efforts in providing relief to Haiti due to the recent major earthquake. Over 1.2 million people have been affected and the death toll has risen to over 1900. “It is quite possible that Haiti is going to need more help than ever before,” said Akim Kikonda, CRS’ country representative in Haiti. “Prior to the earthquake, people here were already struggling to make ends meet. The area was slowly recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 but drought and two recent tropical storms have largely destroyed the little livelihoods people had been able to restore. After Saturday’s earthquake, it is only going to get worse.”
Donations of cash or checks can be placed in the poor box this weekend. Checks should be made out to St. Joseph with “Haiti Relief” indicated in the memo section. Your support is truly appreciated.
